Brief History of the Most Famous Bus Ever Made
In the 1950’s, Motor Coach Industries (MCI) manufactured the Model MCI-5 Passenger Coach. It was a good 35’ coach with a manual 4 speed transmission. However, the Bus industry was growing and needed something a little bigger. The MCI-5 was also beginning to present a rust problem. In 1968 MCI introduced the improved 40’ MCI-7 using stainless steel and aluminum in the chassis with stainless steel skins to address this rust problem. The model MCI 8 came next and was produced from 1973 to 1978. Over 4,500 bus units were built of this type. It had a square profile and included more stainless steel and aluminum in the sub-chassis.

From 1979 to 1987 came the now famous MCI 9. The MCI-9 represents the most successful passenger bus ever made. Over 9,000 have been produced. This coach's sub-frame and the rear section around the engine is 90% Stainless Steel and Aluminum. In 1982, MCI made improvements in the steering and suspension.
This new MCI was the first tour bus long haul coach ever designed to last 30 years and 3 million miles. Most other brands of over-the-road passenger buses were built to last about 10 years or 1 million miles. When MCI decided to build this coach with the famous 90% Stainless Steel and Aluminum sub-chassis construction, they knew how important it would be to MCI's dominance in the marketplace.
